Interning on the Projects Abroad Animal Care project in Bolivia is an ideal opportunity for volunteers of all ages to gain practical, hands-on experience with animals as an intern. This placement offers interns the opportunity to get involved in various activities to help domestic and wild animals, including caring for animals such as dogs, birds, and tortoises.
This project is suitable for everyone, whether you are on a gap year, career break, or volunteer vacation. All we ask is for interns to have a genuine interest in the well-being of animals. You do not need to speak a high level of Spanish, but learning a few basics before you arrive is always helpful.
Interning at an Animal Care Placement in Bolivia
Animal Care interns are placed at a rescue and rehabilitation centre about 30 minutes away from the centre of Cochabamba. The centre focuses on caring for stray dogs, birds of prey, and tortoises.
Working hours are typically from Monday to Friday, and you can choose if you prefer to work in the mornings and afternoons, or all day. Local staff are usually at the centre from 8am to 6pm, and take a couple of hours for lunch.
Interns assist trained staff with taking care of injured, mistreated, and abandoned animals. This includes working with animals that are permanent residents at the centre and as part of a rehabilitation process before animals are released back into the wild.
Working on an Animal Care Placement in Bolivia with Projects Abroad
As part of your daily tasks, you will help the local staff take care of the dogs, including feeding, bathing, playing with them, and taking them for walks. You may sometimes be able to go into the community to help staff with rescuing dogs that have been abandoned and left on the streets. In this case, interns take on a more observational role.
Interns not only work with dogs, but also have the chance to assist with preparing food, feeding, and cleaning cages and resting areas of birds and tortoises. When any of the animals have been successfully treated and are ready to be released, interns accompany their supervisors to release the birds and tortoises back into the wild. Unfortunately, there are many cases where the birds are not able to leave the centre due to injuries. In this case the birds will be taken care of at the centre permanently.
From time to time, the centre organizes campaigns focused on educating underprivileged people about animal sterilization. This gives interns the chance to meet people in the community.
Interns also help with basic maintenance and gardening work around the centre.
You can join the Animal Care project in Bolivia for two weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
