Projects Abroad provides the following specialties on the Nursing Elective in Bolivia: adult, child, mental health and learning disabilities. Our Nursing Elective students work with the Centros de Salud around Cochabamba and its outskirts. You can get hands-on work experience with some minor medical cases, particularly with vaccination campaigns.
You must be a student in nursing school to do an Elective placement. Nursing Elective students participating in the nursing programs can also get involved in community-outreach programs.
Centros de Salud are public health clinics open to everyone in Cochabamba, regardless of their financial state. With very basic facilities, the health clinics attend to mostly minor emergencies, accidents and routine visits. There is insufficient funding to both maintain the facilities in complete working order and provide the hospital with sufficient staff or materials. Nursing Elective students and interns are therefore needed to help and your work will be greatly appreciated.
Nursing Student Electives in Bolivia with Projects Abroad
You will be given a supervisor who will coordinate your placement. They will be eager to test your knowledge and giving you the benefit of their training and experience. Your supervisor will be qualified and experienced in collaborating with Elective students.
If part of your module is to review specific case studies, they are available to discuss these with you. Projects Abroad can coordinate with your university to ensure the requirements for your Elective are met. We can help with any paperwork you may need to complete.
Elective students in Bolivia should be aged 18 or older and will need intermediate Spanish in order to communicate directly with the majority of doctors and patients. Many students who lack confidence in their Spanish language ability take a Spanish Language course or join a Teaching or Care project before joining their Medicine & Healthcare program. This gives you the opportunity to improve your language skills before starting the medical part of your placement.
While in Bolivia, you will live with a host family where you will experience the real day-to-day lives of the Cochabamba community. You can also spend any free time with other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore the wonderful city of Cochabamba.
